Recommendations of Medication

SCOPE: Triage Nurse, RN, Registered Nurse


POLICY:

  1. Recommendations of over-the-counter (OTC) medication aligning with care advice resulting from the triage process completed by the triage nurse is considered within the scope of practice of the triage nurse and is permitted by Anytime Pediatrics. Medications on the approved OTC medication list per practice is considered within the scope of practice of the triage nurse.


  • OTC medication recommendations can occur only after allergies have been verified with the caller.


  1. Recommendations of prescription medication by the triage nurse is prohibited unless standing order is in place by provider for specific patient symptoms.


  • Prior to calling in standing order prescription medication, allergies must be verified with caller


EXCEPTION: Recommendation of OTC medications by triage nurse may be prohibited in some states. It is the triage nurse’s responsibility to be aware of and practice within the scope of practice identified by the states in which the call is located.
